MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

What did the Fellowship or Laureate mean to you at the time you received it?

The honor validated my artistic practice and supported my film. It was a strong message to me that I was on the right path.

What do you do now? Has your art evolved or changed?

I continue to make documentary films, but with a more essayistic and poetic focus. I am Professor Emerita of Documentary Film and Video in the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University. My partner John Haptas and I have collaborated on many films that have screened in festivals worldwide. To learn more about our work, go to our website: http://www.stylofilms.com/

What is one piece of advice you would give to an emerging artist?

I would encourage finding a group of fellow travelers with whom you can discuss issues and ideas about your art and art practice. This support is so valuable over the years.

Briefly, how would you describe the state of the arts locally, as well as national and beyond?

Feisty, underfunded, evolving, lively, provocative
